Melbourne is blessed with a rich artistic and cultural scene, and is home to many theatre companies which stage regular productions at a number of venues. The most prestigious venue is perhaps the Victorian Arts Centre, which hosts the Australian Opera, the Australian Ballet and the Melbourne Theatre Company among others. Other notable venues include the Anthenaeum, Palais and Regent theatres.

The city also has a strong tradition of supporting live music, which can be enjoyed at many places in the centre. Large venues such as Melbourne Park or the Festival Hall attract big names in music, while many pubs and clubs feature good live acts.

Considered one of the most European places in the Antipodes, Melbourne has a distinctive evening atmosphere and some trendy bars that are reminiscent of London. By night the city centre remains a lively place.

Live music is popular with the locals in Australia and accounts for the country's success on the international rock charts during the last two decades. Many of these bands, such as Crowded House came out of small venues such as the ones that can be found in St. Kilda's mains street.
